Salicornia europaea L. regulates salinity stress through production of saponins and antioxidant compounds
Authors
Abstract:
Abstract Salicornia europaea L. is a common halophytic plant species distributed in many saline soils and habitats, including margins of many wetlands. Salicornia europaea grows around Mighan Wetland, a natural desert ecosystem in central Iran with fluctuating water levels due to constant heat and severe wind throughout the year. Although, aspects of biology and ecology of halophytes growing in Mighan Wetland have been studied, information on Salicornia europaea is scarce. This research was carried out to compare both enzymatic and non- enzymatic antioxidants of Salicornia europaea L. Soil and whole plant samples were collected in triplicate four equidistant locations from Wetland edge in May, 2016. Soil samples were analyzed for its pH and electric conductivity (EC). Plant leaves were analyzed for activities of stress-related enzymatic (peroxidase and catalase) antioxidants and contents of non-enzymatic antioxidants (flavonoids and anthocyanins), cell membrane integrity via measuring lipid peroxidation through Malondialdehyde production (MDA) and changes in content of leaf saponin. Analysis of variance (ANOVA), Duncan Post-hoc tests and correlation tests were performed using the SPSS.22 statistical program. Results showed that peroxidase activity reduced and contents of total flavonoids, anthocyanin, saponin and MDA as well as activity of catalase hiked with increasing EC. The study showed that S. europaea reacts to salinity stress by restricting catalase in proxisomes to limit ROS production, accumulating carbohydrates in cytosol to improve osmoregulation and producing flavonoids, anthocyanine and saponins as complementary osmo regulators and defensive agents.

increased salinity stress because of rising temperature as a result of global warming. High salinity enhances plants photorespiration and affects its physiology, but Salicornia europaea L. in Urmia Lake has adapted to grow, propagate and occupy increasingly exposed saline habitats. Plant and soil samples were collected in triplicate plots from different sites of retreated beds of Urmia Lake in ...

Phenolic composition and biological activities of fruit extracts from Italian and Algerian Olea europaea L. cultivars were studied. Total phenolic and tannin contents were quantified in the extracts. Moreover 14 different phenolic compounds were identified, and their profiles showed remarkable quantitative differences among analysed extracts. Moreover antioxidant and enzymatic inhibition activi...
full textSalinity stress enhances production of solasodine in Solanum nigrum L.
Various in vitro grown tissues (non-regenerative callus, regenerative callus and microshoot derived leaves) of Solanum nigrum L. were cultured under salinity stress (0-150 mM NaCl) for enhanced production of solasodine, a steroidal alkaloid and an alternative to diosgenin, which is used as a precursor for the commercial production of steroidal drugs. The role of plant growth regulators and vari...
full textSalicornia europaea L. Na⁺/H⁺ antiporter gene improves salt tolerance in transgenic alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.).
In order to obtain a salt-tolerant perennial alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), we transferred the halophyte Salicornia europaea L. Na(+)/H(+) antiporter gene, SeNHX1, to alfalfa by using the Agrobacterium-mediated transformation method. The transformants were confirmed by both PCR and RT-PCR analyses. Of 197 plants that were obtained after transformation, 36 were positive by PCR analysis using 2 pr...
full textAssessment of Salinity Effects on Some Morphological and Physiological Traits and In Vitro Culture of Halophyte Plant (Salicornia Europaea)
Salicornia europaea is a halophytic annual plant of the Chenopodiaceae family, which is considered as an oil plant in marine irrigation. This experiment was conducted to determine the effect of salinity and to reach the best hormonal treatment for shoot regeneration. After washing and sterilization, seeds of S. europaea were cultured under controlled light and temperature conditions at five sal...
full textThe growth and accumulation of osmotic solutes of the halophyte common glasswort (Salicornia europaea) under salinity conditions
A halophyte, common glasswort (Salicornia europaea L.), showed no phytotoxic or deficiency symptom at 100 and 300 mM NaCl, whereas plant growth was stunted at 0, 500, and 700 mM NaCl. In addition, the water content was lower within the shoots at 0 mM NaCl, as compared with the range of NaCl treatments. Under NaCl treatment, Naþ levels increased in the shoot and the root, whereas the levels of o...
